How an interior job goes
-
Before we start, we agree on the rooms, colors and sheens, so everyone knows the plan on day one.
-
On the first day we move furniture to the middle of the room and cover it, lay drop cloths, take off outlet and switch covers, and mask what isn't getting paint. Then comes the prep: filling nail holes and dents, fixing small cracks, caulking gaps along trim, and spot priming patches so they don't show through the finish.
-
After the paint, we put the covers back, move the furniture back, and walk the rooms with you.
Picking colors and sheens
Going bold? Deep colors like the blue-green bedroom in our photos often need a tinted primer and extra coats to cover evenly. Mention it at the estimate so it's part of the price from the start.
Sheen matters as much as color. A common setup:
| Surface | Usual sheen | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ceilings | Flat | Hides small flaws and doesn't reflect light |
| Living rooms, bedrooms | Matte or eggshell | Soft look, easier to clean than flat |
| Kitchens, bathrooms | Satin | Handles moisture and wiping |
| Trim and doors | Semi-gloss | Stands up to hands, shoes and scrubbing |
Stuck between two colors? Put a large sample on your own wall and look at it in the morning and the evening. Color changes a lot with the light in each room.
What affects the cost of interior painting
We don't post flat prices because two rooms the same size can take very different work. These are the things that move the price:
- Room size and ceiling height
- How much patching and repair the walls need
- Number of colors and how many rooms change color
- Trim, doors and railings included or not
- Dark colors going light, or light going very dark
- Whether the rooms are furnished or empty
Interior painting FAQ
Do I need to move my furniture?
We move and cover the big pieces. Please clear small items, valuables and anything fragile before we arrive.
Can we stay home while you paint?
Yes. We work room by room, so you can keep using the rest of the house.
How long will my project take?
It depends on the number of rooms and how much prep they need. Ask at your estimate and we'll give you a time frame for your project.
Will there be a strong paint smell?
Most interior paints today are low odor, and opening a window helps. If odor is a concern, ask about low or zero VOC paint at your estimate.
